Keefer's Pharmacy, along with being a regular pharmacy, is also proud to be a Compounding Pharmacy. This means that Keefer's has the ability to make up medications that aren't commercially available. The spectrum of compounding is broad, but Keefer's covers almost everything. And, in addition to compounding for people, Keefer's Pharmacy makes up almost a significant portion of their medications for pets. COMPOUNDS FOR PEOPLE

Compounded medications for people are a common occurrence here at Keefer’s Pharmacy. Our patients range from infants to adults, and we’re always happy to cater to your specific needs. Since all insurance companies and plans are different, we do not submit compounded medications to insurance companies. However, if you call your company and they’re willing to cover your medication, we are more than happy to fill out the proper paperwork for you to submit to them for reimbursement. The main types of compounded medications for people are:

·         Alternate Doses

o   If your physician feels that you need to take a specific dose of a medication that isn’t commercially available, this is where Keefer's comes in. We can make up your medication into capsules with whatever dosage strength you are prescribed.

·         Flavored Liquids

o   Used mostly for children, flavored liquid medications are extremely popular. Our flavor options include cherry, banana, vanilla, bubblegum, marshmallow, grape and apple. We will make up your medication in its specific dose and your choice of flavor.

·         Hormone Therapy

o   Hormone therapy is another very popular compounded drug type. Some drugs need to be taken differently than others, and we are here to make sure that you have a variety of options. We can compound these prescriptions in creams and ointments, in capsules, or in flavored lozenges.

·         Newman’s Nipple Ointment

o   A special recipe that very few pharmacies nationwide have access to, Newman’s Nipple Ointment is made specially for nursing mothers.

·         Wart Solution

o   One of Keefer’s Pharmacy’s very own pharmacists created the recipe for 5 FU wart solution. 5 FU is extremely successful in wart removal when over the counter products just aren’t cutting it.

VETERINARY COMPOUNDS

Just like people, pets can get sick too. Keefer’s Pharmacy offers a variety of different solutions to all of your pet’s health care issues, whether it’s a short term ailment or a lifelong condition. We have made up medications for a wide variety of animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, birds, turtles, monkeys, horses, tigers and guinea pigs. And, since no two animals are the same, we offer multiple different dosage forms so that you can pick the best option for your specific pet.

·         Capsules

o   Almost every drug that we compound at Keefer’s can be made up into a capsule. Our capsules range in size from #4 (the smallest) to #000 (the largest).

·         Flavored Liquids

o   For pets who aren’t too keen on taking a capsule, or if you just want to add a little flavor to your pet’s day, flavored liquids are a great alternative. We offer chicken, tuna, beef, apple, grape, liver, tutti frutti and banana flavors.

·         Chew Treats

o   Easily the most fun way to dose your pet’s medication is in the form of our medicated chew treats. Our sister pharmacy, Petranek's Pharmacy in Libertyville, makes these up per-request and sends them over to us for our patients. Most of the medications that we work with can be compounded into chew treats, with a few exceptions. Flavors for these are chicken, tuna, beef, liver and bacon.

·         Transdermal

o   Finally, we offer transdermal gel medications for your furry friends. This medication is dosed out onto your finger and simply rubbed into the hairless portion of your pet’s ear and absorbed into the skin.
